Gasan, Marinduque, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), in partnership with Marinduque State University–Gasan Campus and local stakeholders, successfully led a series of youth-centered environmental activities in celebration of World Wildlife Day and World Water Day on March 18 to 19, 2026, at Barangay Banuyo, Gasan, Marinduque.
A defining highlight of the event was the introduction of “Mariano,” the Philippine deer (Rusa marianna) mascot of the Marinduque Wildlife Sanctuary, to the academe. More than a symbolic figure, Mariano represents resilience and renewed hope following the rediscovery of the Philippine deer in Marinduque after it was once feared locally extinct in the 1990s. The mascot served as a powerful reminder that with sustained protection and collective effort, nature can recover—encouraging students and communities to take an active role in conservation.

Complementing this message, a coastal cleanup activity mobilized students, faculty members, and community volunteers in Barangay Banuyo. The initiative resulted in the collection of eleven (11) bags of assorted waste materials, including plastic bottles, fishing nets, ropes, hygiene products, plastic containers, household waste, rubber, and cloth debris—demonstrating the impact of collective action in protecting coastal ecosystems and reducing marine pollution.
Environmental lectures and youth engagement sessions further reinforced the call to action, covering key topics such as environmental principles, youth leadership, and the importance of translating awareness into concrete initiatives. Participants were also introduced to DENR programs and the Tayo Ang Kalikasan advocacy, highlighting how government efforts and youth-led actions can work hand in hand to drive meaningful environmental change.
In her welcome message, Dr. Paloma D. De Chavez, Dean of the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, emphasized the critical role of academic institutions in shaping environmentally responsible citizens. PENRO Cesar P. Odi likewise underscored the value of collaboration and shared responsibility, stating, “Ang pangangalaga sa kalikasan ay hindi lamang tungkulin ng pamahalaan kundi responsibilidad ng bawat mamamayan.”
Through these initiatives, DENR and its partners reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening environmental stewardship, empowering the youth, and fostering collective action toward biodiversity conservation and the sustainable management of natural resources.
